Charlottesville for many was eye-opening. However, it wasn’t anything new, and we’d be remiss if we as a Democratic organization didn’t take action. There is no room for hatred and we have made the choice to take the following steps in addressing systemic racism:
We are raising funds for the Southern Poverty Law Center
We’ve elected to promote and individually donate to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization dedicated to educating, promoting, and litigating for social justice. You can donate to the Southern Poverty Law Center here.
We have formed a Systemic Racism Ad-hoc Committee
Our goal is to open and create dialogue within our own community, to not only understand the day-to-day realities of systemic racism, but to work together to create solutions and support legislation that will comprehensively address the root problems of racial injustice.
We have endorsed a resolution written by the Morongo Basin Democratic Club, reading:
Whereas, racism, religious discrimination, homophobia and misogyny are contrary to American values; and,
Whereas, intolerance in all its forms has been shown to be learned behavior; and,
Whereas, it has been shown that racism and hate harm the emotional and physical health of both the victims and perpetrators.
Therefore, be it resolved that the Morongo Basin Democratic Club challenge laws and policies that propagate, influence and support racism, bigotry and discrimination.
Be it further resolved that individually we commit ourselves to speaking up and out whenever racism, discrimination, homophobia or misogyny is present.
Though these actions are a drop in the bucket, we as an organization are resolute and dedicated to doing our part to end systemic racism.
